The Desert Biennial

About the Organization

Desert X has presented four exceptional contemporary art exhibitions in its brief history and has welcomed about 1.75 million visitors to date. A self-guided outdoor art encounter, site-specific installations are meant to be experienced from a variety of perspectives and points of view. Each Desert X exhibition is accompanied by public programs, fueled by community partners with educators, school districts, cultural organizations, city governments and local organizations. These include specialized arts training for high school students, workforce development (career training, high school internships, a curatorial fellowship, and training for emerging artist-educators), bilingual educational resources, online and in-person conversations, performances and music, training for 100+ volunteers, and educational workshops for children and families. Expanded Learning for youth includes the Desert X Art Club, Classroom Intensives and Field Trips. Launched in Spring 2024 with Palm Springs Art Museum, "Desert r&d" was a weekend of panels, workshops, discussions and studio visits, free and open to the public. Held at the mid-point and close of each exhibition, Community Weekends offer artist panels, Q&A sessions, guided hikes with artists and local desert experts, and caravans to featured artwork sites.
